not your momma's turkey burger.

greetings, readers.
as inspiration hits me, i follow through with it.
so, when i got the idea to make turkey burgers, i went a little overboard.
homemade hamburger buns, pomegranate ketchup.
it was a worthwhile venture in the food world. my taste buds gave me an award.

i piled them high with greens, cheese, avocado, and the ketchup.
they were so yummy.

happy eating.

Southern Belles.

welcome to the south.

let me introduce you to chocolate and biscuits.

yes you heard correctly. chocolate gravy. biscuits.
it's heavenly.

the recipe is really easy,
just milk,
cocoa powder,
sugar,
and butter.
all perfectly whisked together over a hot stove top.
served on the side with a biscuit fresh out of the oven. breakfast has never tasted so good.

thanks for reading, and happy eating.

make yourself a sandwich

it's lunchtime.

put on a fancy skirt, blast some music, and make yourself a
sandwich. not just any sandwich. make yourself the best
sandwich you will ever eat.

yeah you might get some funny stares for grilling a sandwich
with pickles and chips. but who cares? it taste pretty darn good and
 that's really all that matters.

recipe adapted from here. p.s. this website is my favorite.

two thick slices of french bread
3 pieces of ham
lots of sliced sharp cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon of coarse ground mustard
1 baby dill pickle (thinly sliced)
a handful of frito honey barbecue twists (crushed with the flat side of a knife)
1 table spoon of butter for grilling

spread mustard on both sides of bread. use a light hand.
layer cheese, ham, pickles, chips and extra cheese.
melt butter in pan over medium heat. lightly brown on both sides. eat.
authors note: best with an apple and peanut butter, and blueberry pomegranate V8.

the pickles and chips add just the right amount of crunch.

happy eating,

A cup full of fall

hello dears.
mal had found a new recipe from a blog about this tomato soup and grilled cheese bowl of goodness, so we set out to try it for ourselves. it was worth trying.
this recipe was so easy, and it was so good.
roast 5-6 tomatoes and garlic in the oven for about an hour, blend them in the food processor
then add them into a pot with about three cups of vegetable broth
bring to a boil, let it simmer. add thyme and red pepper (we just eyed it.)
add into ramekins, and put a slice of bread on top. add cheddar cheese and then put in the oven for about ten minutes.
they come out of the oven smelling wonderful and tasting even better.
so easy, and such a great fall meal.

yum. i'm craving them again already.

The way to a man's heart.

Morning dears.
mal and i decided we'd do a little birthday/date baking.
date in the sense of homecoming date. yes. i asked. which means i got to choose
who i wanted to go to. booyah.
mal was baking for our friend caroline's birthday.
basically all the cupcakes turned out really cute.
it's a little crafty, and a little foody.

we (i) made the cutest little flaggies to put in them.
just cut paper strips and fold them in half around the skewer,
tape together, and then cut the ends so they look like flags.
you can leave them without letters, but we actually had
reasons for making these cupcakes, so we used them for
writing.

have a fabulous tuesday. (two posts in a row, aren't you proud?)
we'll be trying to do a post everyday, so keep checking in and stopping by.

Endless pastabilities.

Evening to all who read this, and even the ones that don't,
finally finally finally.....the weather has decided to shed its horrid heat and finally cool down, which means it's finally time for starbucks salted caramel mochas (which i tried today for the first time, and it may be the best mocha i've ever had, and i'm a coffee-junkie, so that is actually saying a lot.), the first few christmas songs (yes, i, alyssa, am that girl that decides it's christmas song weather as soon as i need to wear a jacket. anything below 60 degrees), and yummy (and easy) pastas for dinner.

this was what i made for dinner tonight, and it's one of my absolute favorite pasta dishes.

It's another simple recipe.

Chicken and asparagus pasta.
The ingredients are as followed:

  • chicken, one pack cooked and cut into small pices
  • asparagus, about 2-3 cups of chopped 2-inch pieces
  • red bell pepper, chopped into bite size pieces
  • one cup of chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • one box of pasta, i used bow tie because they're so cute
  • one clove of minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh basil
  • parmesan cheese (about a cup)
so, the directions are fairly simple,
make sure you have a large bowl to mix and serve the dish in.
saute the asparagus in a saucepan with the olive oil, and after about 2-4 minutes, add in the bell pepper and the garlic, and keep that cooking for another minute or two. add in the chicken broth and bring it all to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 4 minutes. then mix the chicken, pasta, and the asparagus mix together. add the basil (chopped into fine pieces) and the cheese, stir. and shazaam. you have the perfect cold winter night dinner.

Mexican flare.

Hello, readers.
Last week, mal-ster and i decided we wanted to have a little fun trying out some new recipes.
one of the ones we tried was our twist on empanadas.
this summer on vacation, we ate at this fabulous little tapas restaurant and had some of the best empanadas i've ever had. they were steak with green apple, and they were so good.
so, we made our own.

The ingredient list is as followed:
  • one green apple
  • one box of pie crusts
  • one pack of chicken tenderloins
  • one pack of ranch seasoning
  • sour cream
  • cream cheese
  • whipping cream
  • cheese

making them is actually quite simple...seriously.
cook the chicken and then shred it.
cut up the apple into bite size pieces
make the ranch sauce (we really just eyed this, it's about half the ranch seasoning pack, a bit of cream cheese, some sour cream, and some whipping cream. you want the sauce to have a fairly thick consistency, but make sure not to use too much of the ranch seasoning, you don't want it to overpower all the other flavors.)

assembling them was the fun part. cut circles from the pie crust (you can use a cup or bowl for this) and scoop a generous amount of the ranch sauce on the circle, add chicken, apple and cheese, then fold over and seal the edges with the end of a fork. bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until the pie crust is a light golden brown.

you can serve them with a simple garnish, like we did, or you can drizzle some of the leftover ranch sauce on top.

the mix of flavors in these empanadas may seem strange, but they mix so well. the apple gets perfectly cooked, the ranch enhances all the flavors. and the baked pie crusts give mal.lys's empanadas a new twist. try it out, let us know what you think.

Simple as a rose, my darling little lavender.

What could be better than a light simple dessert, flavored with the essence of a flower shop?
nothing. that's the only correct answer.
What's better than lavender icing to go on top?
       once again, nothing.
Basically, this combination is nothing short of heavenly.

I (Alyssa) have fallen in love with rosewater cupcakes from a bakery near my house, so I took it upon myself to create my own much simpler version of these little cupcakes I've grown to love.

Right now you may be asking yourself what rosewater is, dear reader.
Rosewater is essentially what it sounds like, the essence of rose in liquid form. It's good for many different purposes and I'll be sure to share some of it's other uses.

It has a very distinct flavor, basically it tastes like you're biting into a bouquet of flowers. it's not for the heavy chocolate lovers, but the more refined palates of society. (kidding. they're so good.)

Now on to the actual process...

I tried to make this recipe as simple as possible, so all I used was:
  • a white cake mix
  • whipped vanilla frosting
  • rosewater (I used Neilsen-Massey's brand from William Sonoma)
  • dried lavender (ground, I used a mortar and pestle)
  • Purple food coloring to give it a little color

For the cupcakes, follow the recipe on the box and add two teaspoons of rosewater to the cake mix, bake at 350 degrees for about ten minutes, they come out perfect.

For the frosting, add about a tablespoon of ground lavender and mix together, you can add food coloring if you please.

Simply frost and sprinkle on a tad bit of leftover lavender for a perfect little garnish.
Enjoy, reader.
There's really nothing better in life than a floral cupcake, and the lavender frosting is the best complimentary flavor.

Summer's end.

What better to finish out the summer than a lovely limeade?
The ingredients are simple:
  • lemons
  • limes
  • sprite
  • crushed ice

fill glass about half full with crushed ice, add sprite...

juice lemons and limes and add the juice to the sprite...

Viola! you are finished. the perfect, light, refreshing drink. a great addition to a backyard barbecue or party.
enjoy, readers.
